Use Case
A major German energy service provider manages over 1,800 locations, including numerous critical data centers that are required to secure IT infrastructures around the clock. The previous monitoring processes, which relied on manual troubleshooting and a complex VPN/IT structure, proved to be costly, prone to failure and inflexible. With the implementation of the SMARTsensor system by PSsystec, a highly efficient, IoT-based solution was introduced, enabling comprehensive and continuous monitoring. The system is immediately deployable via a plug-and-play approach without the need for local IT infrastructure. This transition resulted in significant cost reductions and improved operational security.
Challenge
Decentralized infrastructures, such as data centers and technical plant systems, place particularly high demands on efficient alarm management. A nationwide provider operating over 1,800 locations faced the challenge of ensuring the continuous availability of critical infrastructure, including ventilation systems, backup power units and climate control for switching stations. The monitoring and maintenance of these systems were the responsibility of specialized teams that relied on outdated technologies and manual fault detection. Faults were often only discovered after they had caused operational disruptions, leading to high costs and inefficiencies. Local IT solutions and manual inspections proved neither sustainable nor scalable. To detect threshold violations early, minimize downtime and optimize processes, the provider required a comprehensive and modern solution. At the same time, this solution needed to meet the company's sustainability requirements and integrate seamlessly into the existing infrastructure.

Solution and Technical Implementation
Installation and Integration
The IoT measurement system by PSsystec was centrally connected to a platform by retrofitting IoT gateways directly into existing electrical cabinets. The plug-and-play solution eliminated the need for on-site configuration, saving time and resources. With up to 40 potential-free inputs per gateway, locations of any size could be efficiently integrated. An app simplified the assignment of monitored plant system technology to the gateways, further optimizing the installation process.
Real-time Monitoring and Alarm Management
The IoT gateways continuously capture parameters such as temperature, pressure and fault contact values, reporting threshold violations. Thanks to NB-IoT cellular technology, monitoring even hard-to-access system components is effortlessly possible. The solution operates without local IT integration or VPN, reducing complexity and lowering IT costs by 70%. All operational and fault notifications are centrally recorded in the service center. This enables targeted planning of service operations, minimizing downtime and increasing operational efficiency.
