Use Case

Resilient Energy and Device Testing During Network Cable Outage

Operational Security Through Cellular-Based IoT Infrastructure

The necessary civil engineering work was carried out in front of the PSSyTec GmbH company building in summer 2025. When setting off on the road, the classic Internet line was cut — with the result: no LAN, no fixed network Internet — for two full days. But unlike in many traditional IT infrastructures, PSSyTec continued to operate — stable, completely online, completely independent. The reason: The entire testing and development environment is also based on mobile-based SmartBox technology. Gateways, sensors and prototypes work autonomously and require neither local IT infrastructure nor wired networks. An unexpected real-life stress test scenario and at the same time impressive proof of the resilience of your own solution.

challenge

How resilient is an IoT company to IT failures?

A severed cable can lead to total failure for many organizations — especially when central gateways, devices and monitoring systems rely on a wired LAN infrastructure. That was exactly what happened right in front of PSSyTec's headquarters. The road was torn open, an excavator damaged the line — no network, no Internet, no VPN.

For a company that offers IoT solutions for distributed properties, decentralized infrastructure and production sites, the malfunction involuntarily became a live demo of its own system strength.

The central question: Will your own showcases, pilot systems and product prototypes continue to work even if the IT connection to the corporate network is completely cut off?

Solution and technical implementation

Installation and infrastructure

PSSyStec tests and develops all IoT solutions based on the SmartBox — including SmartSensor, SmartModBus, SmartSocket and IoT Energy Monitor. All systems work via mobile radio (NB-IoT/LTE-M) and do not require local network connections. This means: No LAN cables, no VPN dependency, no integration into internal IT.

Even during the two-day Internet interruption, the entire test operation continued. Gateways in the distribution systems, sensors in the demo installations, power measurement devices, Modbus communication — everything worked autonomously via mobile communications.

Data transfer and cloud connection

All measurement data was still transmitted live to the cloud platform. The power supply was guaranteed at all times, and the transmission of all real-time data was seamless via the PSSYSTEC test networks with Deutsche Telekom PSA-certified mobile channel. Remote access to the gateways also remained possible — via the configuration platform in the cloud.

Result: Live operation despite line failure

The consistent use of mobile-based, non-invasive technologies has shown:
The systems from the SMARTBOX portfolio are not only suitable for decentralized properties or complex building infrastructure — but also for the toughest everyday conditions.

A classic line failure was used to confirm our own architectural principles:
Mobile communications instead of LAN. Retrofit instead of rewiring. Self-sufficiency instead of dependency.

SMARTbox Portfolio
Benefits

Operate systems independently from local IT
All devices in the SMARTbox portfolio communicate securely via cellular networks – independent of LAN, Wi-Fi or VPN. This ensures resilience and operational stability in any environment.

Secure environments and infrastructure
Sensors and gateways run autonomously, even during network outages. Data flows, monitoring and remote access remain available even if physical lines are disrupted.

Plug-and-play for any environment
Whether in new buildings, existing infrastructure or outdoor areas: the modular SMARTbox solutions are easy to install, require no complex IT integration and are ready to use immediately.

Field-proven cellular technology
PSsystec systems use PSA-certified mobile transmission paths from Telekom (NB-IoT, LTE-M) – ideal for energy-autonomous or hard-to-reach locations, even under extreme conditions.
